Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Attention
Here are some signs that your pool filter might need repair:
- Decreased Water Flow: A slow trickle where there should be a strong flow is a red flag. This could indicate a clogged filter, a problem with the pump, or an air leak in the system.
- Cloudy Pool Water: If your pool water isn’t sparkling clear, even after you’ve been running the filter for a while, it could be a sign that your filter isn’t functioning properly.
- Increased Backwashing Frequency: Does your filter seem to need backwashing more often than usual? This could mean there’s a tear in the filter media or another issue preventing proper filtration.
- Unusual Noises: Your filter should run quietly. If you hear grinding, banging, or other unusual noises, it’s a good idea to call a pool service professional.
Pool Filter Repair
Excellent water filtration is a cornerstone of proper pool maintenance. Over the past several years, we’ve observed changes in environmental conditions, including increased debris, dust, and higher winds. Arizona summers also require your pool to have the best filtration possible as the average water temperatures are much higher here than other states, which contributes to algae growth. AZ Oasis Pools will assess your backyard and pool to provide a recommendation for the best filter for your situation.
There are three filter types used to filter pool water: Cartridge, Diatomaceous Earth (DE), and Sand (granular media).
Cartridge filters are the simplest and requires almost no maintenance except to disassemble and spray clean the four cartridges approximately every 6 months. Due to the simple, but efficient design, cartridge filters are energy and water efficient and also capable of filtering out fine dirt (10 micron). They work wonderfully with variable speed pumps because their particle removal efficiency improves at lower flow rates.
DE filters are the most complex of the filters but provide superior filtration (3 micron) compared to other filter types. The trade off is that DE filters are more fragile and expensive to operate and maintain.
DE filters can need periodic backwashing to remain effective and should be disassembled and cleaned approximately every 4 months. There are cartridge DE filters that are wonderful at filtration and are less fragile but they still need to be disassembled 3 times per year, potentially with a backwash between cleanings.
Sand filters (granular media) are relatively simple and provide an alternative that does not require the filter body be disassembled 2-3 times per year to clean the filter media. Unfortunately, sand has the least efficient filtration capacity (20+ micron) and is the least energy and water efficient. We have found that the reduced filtration efficiency leads to higher chemical usage and a greater likelihood that a pool will struggle with algae. There are other granular media that can be used in sand filters to improve filtration efficiency.
Sand can need periodic refreshing or replacement, however, there is no reliable standard as the biggest influence is pool use and surround vegetation. Refreshing the pool sand is relatively inexpensive, but sand replacement is labor intensive and relatively expensive.
Our Filter Repair Expertise
Our technicians are trained to diagnose and repair a wide range of filter problems, including:
- Cleaning and Replacing Filter Media: Sand, DE powder, and cartridge filters all require regular cleaning or replacement to maintain their effectiveness. We can handle this for you!
- Repairing Leaky Filters: A leak in your filter can waste water and reduce its efficiency. Our technicians can identify and fix leaks to keep your filter functioning properly.
- Fixing Pump and Valve Issues: Sometimes, filter problems can be traced back to an issue with the pool pump or valves. We can diagnose and repair these issues as well.
