Pool Pump Repair

Don’t Let a Pump Problem Put a Damper on Your Pool Fun: Pool Pump Repair Services by AZ Oasis Pools

Your pump moves every drop of pool water through the filter and back out the returns. In a Phoenix summer it may run 8 or more hours a day in 100°F heat, so when it stops priming, gets loud or trips the breaker, the water can turn within days. AZ Oasis Pools repairs and replaces single-speed, two-speed and variable-speed pool pumps across Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and Southwest Mesa. Most repairs carry a 1-year warranty.

Why Pool Pumps Wear Out Faster in the Valley

Pumps here run longer and hotter than in most of the country. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Phoenix show average highs above 100°F from June through September, which is also when water demand, algae risk and run times peak. Equipment pads in full sun put extra heat on motors, and dust and monsoon debris clog baskets and impellers.

Signs Your Pool Pump Needs Repair

  • Won’t prime, or the pump basket never fills with water.
  • Loud screeching or grinding, which usually means worn motor bearings.
  • A rattling, gravelly sound, which points to cavitation or debris in the impeller.
  • Humming but not spinning, often a capacitor or seized motor on single-speed pumps.
  • Tripping the breaker or shutting off when hot.
  • Water leaking under the pump, usually a failed shaft seal.
  • Weak returns or a pool cleaner that barely moves.
  • An error code on a variable-speed drive.

Common Pump Problems and Their Causes

Air leaks on the suction side

A dry or cracked lid O-ring, a loose union or a low water level lets the pump pull air instead of water. The pump loses prime, runs hot and can damage the shaft seal.

Clogged impeller

Seeds, leaves and small debris that get past the basket wedge in the impeller vanes and choke the flow. We clear it or replace the impeller.

Failed shaft seal

The seal keeps water out of the motor. Once it leaks, water reaches the bearings, so catching a leak early can save the motor.

Bearings, capacitors and motors

Heat and age wear out bearings and start capacitors. Sometimes a motor can be repaired, and sometimes replacing the motor or the whole pump makes more sense.

Clogged filter

A dirty filter makes the pump work against high pressure. If your filter pressure is high, start with pool filter repair.

Single-Speed vs. Variable-Speed Pumps

A variable-speed pump can run slowly for long filtering cycles and speed up only for cleaning or water features. Under the pump affinity laws, power draw falls roughly with the cube of speed, so half speed uses about one-eighth the power. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver guidance recommends variable-speed pumps for this reason, and federal efficiency standards that began in July 2021 cover most new residential pool pumps.

Repair or Replace Your Pool Pump?

Usually a repair Usually a replacement
Lid O-ring, basket, drain plugs Seized or burned-out motor on an older pump
Shaft seal leak caught early Cracked pump housing or seal plate
Clogged impeller Repeated failures on an old single-speed
Capacitor or bearings Repair quote near the cost of a new efficient pump

Our Pump Repair Process

  1. Check the basics. We look at the water level, baskets, valves, filter pressure and power.
  2. Diagnose. We listen to the motor, test the electrical components and look for air and water leaks.
  3. Repair or quote. We fix it on the spot when we can. If not, we quote repair and replacement side by side.
  4. Program and test. We prime the pump, confirm the flow, and set the run schedule or variable-speed program for the season.
  5. Report. You get an emailed summary of the work done.

Keep Your Pump Running Longer

  • Empty the skimmer and pump baskets weekly, and after every dust storm.
  • Keep the water level about halfway up the skimmer opening so the pump never runs dry.
  • Lube the lid O-ring and replace it when it’s flat or cracked.
  • Keep the motor vents clear of leaves, dirt and pests.
  • Adjust run times with the seasons: longer June to September, shorter in winter.

Pool Pump Repair FAQ

How long should I run my pool pump in Phoenix summers?

Run it long enough to turn the water over (pass the full pool volume through the filter) at least once a day, and longer in peak heat, when algae and chlorine demand go up. A variable-speed pump can run longer at low speed for less energy. We set the schedule to your pool’s volume and plumbing.

Why won’t my pool pump prime?

The usual causes are low water in the skimmer, a cracked or dry pump lid O-ring, a full basket, a closed valve or an air leak on the suction line. Check the water level and the baskets first.

Why is my pool pump making a loud noise?

A screech or grinding noise usually means worn motor bearings. A rattling, gravelly sound often means the pump isn’t getting enough water (cavitation) or there’s debris in the impeller. Bearings can sometimes be replaced, but a noisy older motor is often a candidate for replacement.

Why does my pool pump keep tripping the breaker?

A failing motor, a bad capacitor on single-speed pumps, water in the motor or a wiring fault can trip a breaker. Turn the circuit off and call a technician. Don’t keep resetting it.

Is it worth upgrading to a variable-speed pump?

For most pools that run many hours a day, yes. Under the pump affinity laws, running a pump at half speed uses roughly one-eighth the power, and the U.S. Department of Energy notes that variable-speed pumps can save significant energy. Federal efficiency rules that took effect in 2021 now apply to most new residential pool pumps.

Should I repair or replace my pool pump?

Seals, O-rings, baskets, lids, capacitors and clogged impellers are usually repairs. A seized or burned-out motor, a cracked housing or an old single-speed pump with repeated problems often makes replacement the better value. We’ll quote both.
